Margot (Nicole Kidman) and her son Claude decide to visit her sister Pauline (Jennifer Jason Leigh) who she is not on speaking terms with, after she announces that she is getting married to less–than–impressive Malcolm (Jack Black). In short order, the storm the sisters create leaves behind a mess of trashed relationships and exposed family secrets. Pauline still lives in the big family house in the East. With a child of her own, the precocious Ingrid (Flora Cross), and another on the way, she‘s planning to marry Malcolm, who can spend up to a week writing a letter to the editor, and is growing a moustache that he hopes will look funny. Margot is brutal with Pauline, advising her that Malcolm is not worthy to be her husband. The sisters are brutally truthful with each other, especially in conversations about their sexual desirability. What does it do to a woman when she spends years pushing off men who want to sleep with her, and gradually finds there‘s no one to push? Where are male chauvinist pigs when you need them? This dysfunctional family drama asks many such questions with wit and heart felt emotion all of which adds fuel to Margot‘s writing fire.
